James Evans

March 6, 1935 — July 23, 2009

Evans, James ("Jim") Charles Dr.

Dr. James ("Jim") Charles Evans, 74, of Sutton, died peacefully on July 23rd, 2009. Born March 6th, 1935 to Charles and Marion ("Sunny") Evans, Jim grew up in Bradford, with brothers Tom, Bob and Rich. He graduated from the University of Toronto's School of Medicine in 1959 and received a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University. He was actively involved in the United Church of Canada. In addition to his contributions as a layperson throughout his life, Jim began his medical career at the United Church hospital in Hazelton, B.C., followed by three terms of service in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On his second term he was joined by his newlywed wife, Patricia (Patty) Evans, whom he married on August 29, 1970 in California. Jim continued his commitment to the well-being of others as he served for many years at Georgina Medical in Sutton, as well as short-term medical stints in underserved, isolated regions of Canada. He is fondly remembered for his extraordinary faith; his commitment to helping those least able to help themselves; his witty sense of humour; and his dedication to family and friends. Jim was pre-deceased by his parents and by his brothers Tom and Rich, and he will always be dearly loved and missed by his wife Patty; his children Rick, Rob, and Wendy; their spouses, Katie, Rebecca, and Sam; his grandchildren James, Grant, and Caleb; his brother Bob and many loving in-laws, cousins, nephews, and nieces. Visitation will be held at the Forrest & Taylor Funeral Home in Sutton (905- 722-3274) on Sunday, July 26th , from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Monday, July 27th, at Knox United Church in Sutton. Donations in Jim's memory can be made to the Mission & Service Fund of the United Church of Canada; to the Stephen Lewis Foundation; or to Doctors Without Borders.
