With hearts full of sorrow, the family of Keng Woon Chiam—affectionately known as Popo—announce her peaceful passing on June 26, 2026, at Yee Hong Peter K. Kwok Hospice, with loved ones by her side. Born on February 25, 1939, in Sabah, Malaysia, Keng’s life was a tapestry of resilience, warmth, joy, and unwavering compassion. She leaves behind a legacy that gently ripples through all who were fortunate enough to know her.

From her earliest years in Sabah, Keng displayed an insatiable curiosity and strength of spirit. With determination shaping every step of her remarkable journey, she crossed continents and boundaries, always seeking opportunities for growth and connection. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to Memorial University in Newfoundland, where she earned a Master’s Degree in Education Administration, a testament to her perseverance and love of learning. Education was never merely a career for her—it was a calling. As an ESL teacher, she opened doors for countless newcomers, helping them find their place and voice in a new land. Later, she took on the role of real estate agent and, with entrepreneurial flair, established herself as a restauranteur, creating a welcoming place where friends, family, and strangers alike could gather and share a meal.

Throughout her many roles, Keng remained firmly dedicated to her family. She glowed most brightly in the company of her children, her beloved granddaughter, and the family dog Autumn. She is deeply mourned by her devoted daughter, Sern Chin, her sons, Sern Ee and Sern Wei, her cherished granddaughter, Jenna, and all the nieces and nephews and their children. Her sisters, Soo, Peng, and Chek, also grieve the loss of a sister whose kindness and laughter shaped their lives. Family was the heart of Keng’s world—she was not only proud of each of her children, but every milestone of theirs brought her immense joy. Becoming a grandmother was among her proudest accomplishments and a role she embraced wholeheartedly.

Keng filled her days with simple pleasures: watching the news, reading the newspaper, and indulging in her favorite snacks. Her passion for travel was infectious; Paris always held a special place in her heart. She adored pink and red—the colors that best expressed her joyful and vibrant spirit. She found delight in the beauty of her garden, especially her treasured roses and peonies, and relished many a moment over fresh seafood, surrounded by those she loved.
