It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Matthew McCartney of Sutton West Ontario on Monday March 2, 2026 at Southlake Hospital Newmarket.
Matthew is survived by his wife Penny (married August 25, 1984). Loving father of Brad (late Monica) (Casey), Brenda (Michael), Sherrie (Bill), Karen and Roy. Grandfather of Tanya (Dan), Ian (Kerry), Eric (Carli), Christin, Mathew (Belinda), Katie (Charlie), Adrian (Samantha) and Beth. Great Grandfather of Erik, Enya, Margo and Henry.
Matthew was predeceased by his siblings John, Campbell, Anne and Bunt. His parents Stafford & Maggie and his ex-wife Jean Wright.
Growing up he had many jobs. Delivering fish & chips on his bicycle; John Dry Goods, sales and deliveries (with his brother Campbell); Gosling Awning installing awnings (his Mother work there); and Sunrise Cement Co. making cement blocks (his Father owned the company with three other gentlemen) only lasted one year as they ran out of cement.
Matthew graduated from the Provincial Institute of Trades as an electrician in 1953.Being colour blind did not deter him.
Working for Eatons as an apprentice electrician for a number of years. He then started managing the staff that looked after the building maintenance. First at the Toronto Dominion Bank downtown Toronto, then at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Commerce Court Toronto and lastly the Royal Bank of Canada , Globe Realty Management, where he was Manager, Plant and Maintenance.
Matthew retired on September 1, 1996 at the age of 65, as it was mandatory at that time that you could not work past the age of 65. He opened a small business "McCartney General Repairs" to keep himself busy with jobs and being a stay at home Dad to Roy.
Matthew was one of a kind. Caring, thoughtful, witty and always treating people with respect. If something needed fixed he was always up for the challenge. He had such a passion for fishing with his friends. He loved playing euchre and doing any and all types of crosswords. Like his Mother who read peoples fortune with tea leaves, Matthew had the ability to read fortunes using a regular deck of playing cards.
He will be greatly missed by his family, many nieces, nephews, cousins and the may friends that he made along the way, who will cherish his memory in their hearts. Also missed by his four legged friends Mika and Murdoch.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday August 30, 2026 from 1:00 - 4:00 PM at the Egypt Hall - 6756 Smith Blvd, Sutton West, Ontario.
AN IRISH BLESSING
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at
your back.
May the sun shine warm upon
your face,
The rains fall soft upon your
fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm
of his hand.
